The Shadow Artist

A few years ago, I had been dedicating my time painting and supplying several galleries with my art work. By this time, I had a very good idea what was selling and what was not. However, there was this growing energy boiling up in me like a victim tied and bound for too long, struggling for freedom. I’ve been practicing Jungian active imagination for some time and I felt it was important to untie this energy. Set it free. The consequences of keeping this person prisoner in the darkness could be destructive to my health and work.

So before I could finish the latest painting that I had been working on, and by this time I had spent weeks of work on it. Daily work, 8 hours a day or more. Sketching, planning, aligning..etc I made a commitment to untie this energy. To allow it to come to consciousness. I put a mask on as a ritual to let this subconscious energy take over my consciousness. So when I took the mask off again, he would go back to the shadow realm and my consciousness could remain intact. I allowed this destructive energy free range to the painting. He could do anything he wanted to it, but the condition I had was that I was going to record it. The shadow energies that we have in our subconscious have their own agency and autonomy. I had spent half of my life trying to be a good person in the eyes of my father, teachers, bosses, children, society. Now these banned aspects of myself want out. They need to express themselves and come out of the darkness of the subconscious and into the light of the consciousness. So, I let him free. The painting on the right of the video hangs in the gallery in Fredericton New Brunswick called “The Gallery on Queen”, I’m including the link to the painting: https://www.galleryonqueen.com/garry-sanipass This video is probably the most important work I have ever done. I didn’t know it at the time, but it will be the foundation to all of my work later on.

Artistic Integrity, I had heard about the concept before, but I didn’t really know what it meant. So I looked it up today, for the first time.

Artistic Integrity is highly important for several reasons:

1. Authenticity: artistic integrity ensures that artists create work that is genuine and true to themselves. This authenticity resonates with audiences, fostering deeper connections and engagement with the art.

2. Creditbility: Artists with integrity build trust and credibility with their audience. When artists consistently deliver honest, high-quality work, they establish a reputation for reliability and excellence.

3. Impact: Artistic integrity allows artists to create meaningful, impactful work that has the power to inspire, provoke thought, and evoke emotion. By staying true to their vision and values, artists can produce art that leaves a lasting impression on their audience.

4. Personal Fulfillment: Maintaining artistic integrity can lead to a greater sense of personal fulfillment and satisfaction for artists. when artists create work that is true to themselves, they experience a sense of authenticity and purpose in their creative endeavours.

5. Longevity: Artists with integrity often enjoy long and successful careers. By consistently producing quality work and earning the trust and respect of their audience, they are likely to sustain their artistic practice over time.

I think I was in danger of loosing myself if I had not let this other energy come out and keep me in check. He humbled me.

I have much more to say on this video and how it impacted future artistic creations. But for now, I am going to leave this as it is.

Only the painting hangs in the gallery on queen, however that is not how I intended the art work to be displayed. I had always intended to have both the video and the painting together in a room. The video constantly playing on repeat, since I don’t have the space for this. The best I can do is place it here for you as Intended. Both the static painting in juxtaposition to the dynamic video as one, folding past and present on itself.

I have the entire footage available on Patreon so if you like my work and would like to buy me a cup of coffee, it would really help me out please consider going to my Patreon and spending a dollar to see the entire footage, I put the highlights in the above video for you too see what some part of my subconscious is trying to tell me for free.
