Watson Response Test

I’ve created these short ”REELS” for a few reasons. The highest priority is due to my upcoming art show, I need a lot of video content. But I want to pay homage to the Blade Runner movie. The Blade Runner Movie has the Voight-Kampff Test. The history of the Voight-Kampff Test, which is a completely fictional test used for a completely fictional reason and there is a complete history of the test found on this site. https://bladerunner.fandom.com/wiki/Voight-Kampff_test.

The thing that amazes me is that there is an entire history there about a fictional test. It is so immersive and I think it’s ironic that I am creating a reel that is based off of that immersion except my test is based off of real world practices. The Watson Response Test that I’ve created is not based on a single specific test associated with it, but rather involves a variety of methods and metrics used by tech companies to assess user engagement and the effectiveness of algorithms in eliciting desired responses. These methods often involve analyzing user interactions, such as clicks, likes, shares, time spent on platform, and other behavioral data to gauge the impact of algorithmic changes on user behavior. The goal is to optimize algorithms to maximize user engagement, often by targeting dopamine-driven behaviors that keep users coming back to the platform. However, the specifics of these tests and their history would depend on the practices and methodologies employed by individual tech companies, many of which may not be publicly disclosed due to proprietary reasons. So the way they conduct these tests is by using CAT scans and those big clunky noisy machines that measure dopamine receptors etc. This technology wasn’t developed for exploiting peoples feelings and developing addictive behaviours associated with software and algorithms. I think the idea of CAT scans had a more altruistic goal in mind.

One of my favourite reasons why I love Blade Runner is because we empathically go through an existential crisis Through the main character Rick Deckard. He is employed to retire replicants and he himself may be a replicant. So I find myself going through something similar. I am creating reels as content as part of art show that, hopefully demonstrates how we are exploited and manipulated but I need to use the very tools of exploitation and manipulation to get my message across. But it doesn’t do me any good or my art show any good if I’m the only one experiencing this meta moment. I need to record it, share it create it. And then I create yet another layer of immersion. I’m still tweaking the idea, but I hope that my referencing Blade Runner Voight-Kampff test, my Watson Response test and the real history behind it adds to the existentialism of the entire thing.

I’ll be creating a more in-depth analysis of my goals and the history behind the Watson Response Test in my Patreon account.
