I’m starting with a feeling of awe. If I can get the viewer to feel that feeling then I will have succeeded.

But right now I’m focused on the portrait in the painting. My inspiration is Gustav Dore’s illustrations of the divine comedy.

There’s a contrast between the size of the angels and the two people on the bottom. I think that’s what gives the viewer that feeling of awe. I could be wrong by about that, but that’s my theory.
